Default Apigaurd and how to uses on a double deep hive. Whats's your experiences.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I'm sure this has been discussed many times before, but the more I read the more I get confused. I have 45 double deep hives that I need to treat. I've figured out so far that I need to put it on top of the bottom box above the brood but if there's brood in the top box do I place it on top of the top box? Should I make spacers to go between the boxes to allow room for the apigaurd. Also the equipment that I have is getting pretty old and drafty. I know I need to plug up as much of the holes as I can but just how much. I'm also using migratory covers.

    Any advice is really appreciated.

Thank you Mike Syracuse. I spoke to one of the guy's at Mann Lake yesterday in Woodland, CA and he said the same. He said to use 25g per card on the top and bottom boxes and treat again in 10-12 days. One thing that the also said is wait for the temperature to come down a little bit so I'll wait till it gets down into the 80's which should be around the end of the month.

If anyone has an opinion about my plan please let me know.

I have always put in on top of my douple deep brood chambers. The thymol vapor is heavy and will sink which is only part of it's success. The other part is the bees will carry it out of the hive as trash and along the way distribute it thought the hive.

I found it much easier to make a 3/4 spacer when applying apiguard. You need at least 1/4 inch above the treatment for the bees to access it (i use pre packaged trays).

I found apiguard to be effective but every colony reacts to is differently. I had haves that never skipped a beat to others who would not go back in to the hive for a week. Literally. One of my russian hives bearded front, back, sides by the thousands for 6 days. Weather was sunny and in the low 80's. The hive right next to it, nothing, and treatment was applied the same day.
