Default Switching from national to commercial frames

    Hi there

I currently have two commercial hives stocked from two 5 frame national nucs. I've padded out the edges of the national frames so brace comb isn't a big problem.
My plan is once the commercial frames are drawn out to add a national box as a super above the queen excluder and put the national combs (minus queen) into that and add 5 undrawn commercial frames to their place in the brood box. My thinking is the brood in them will hatch and leave the comb the national frames but no more eggs will be laid in it.

Obviously this will be pretty disruptive to the bees with the queen suddenly finding her brood box going from 11 drawn frames to 5.
Was wondering what do people think of this approach? Is there a better way?

Nobody I know of in the US uses the hives you mention, You may be better off asking that question on one of the "international" bee sites, Good luck, but come here for everything else

Your plan will work provided the Commercial frames have brood in them, if you move the Nationals up to soon you may have problems. The Commercial is a big hive to go to from 5 National frames, I expect that some of the Nationals will be honey and pollen so in actual fact you may only have 3 National frames of brood, a better idea may be to move the National frames sideways one at a time as your bees draw out and raise sealed brood in the Commercials taking care not to split the brood nest.

Thanks for the replies. I shall bear in mind geography when posting about UK hives, and I shall move the frames sideways one at a time over the next few weeks till the commercials make up the majority of the brood before moving them above a queen excluder.
