    Default Spotting virgin...

Any tips on spotting a virgin queen? Say, from an after swarm? I've heard they are real skiddish and run to hide in a hurry. Are they still the same length, only skinnier? Thanks, for any tips!!

    Thanks, John

They do tend to run but I don't think it's about hiding as much as they just move a bit quicker and they can also be flighty. Virgins range a bit in size but closer to worker than mated queen. The abdomen has the distinctive angular point of a mated queen but is shorter. Depends a little on the lineage but usually workers have distinctly striped abdomens and quite often a virgin/ mated queen will have a solid colored or subtly striped abdomen.
