Default Where can I get starter bees in the Summer???

I just got my hive setup and realized that most packages of bees are only sold in the spring. Are there options for me in terms of getting bees?

Check with local Bee Keepers or clubs for nucs, hives or splits. Jim

Your best bet would be to pick up a nuc locally.

Check with any local sources that truck packaged bees in and sell them local in your area. I just picked up an extra package that was not claimed from a package reseller in my area.

Last year was my first year. I managed to capture a swarm. Check with your local bee clubs and see if anyone would be willing to help you with a swarm. I got a call from a fellow beekeeper in my club about the swarm. He was on a swarm list and called me as he had more colonies than he wanted at the time. I drove out and picked it up in a cardboard box. A swarm might be a good option for you if it is easy to get and you are lucky enough to find one.

I couldn't ask for an easier first swarm.

    Nice swarm, FB.

I'd agree with FindlayBee - see if you can get a swarm. I, too, got started early last year the same way. You could set your hive up and bait it with a few drops of lemongrass oil. Of course, a frame or two of drawn comb would be even better, if you have it or can get it.

Ok, is there a difference between getting wild bees vs something like the italian bee?

Sure. For me, the difference was approximately $70. That may not be important to others, but then I am cheap. I spent that money on woodenware, instead.

If the swarm came from a feral colony, then it is assumed that they are likely to be "survivor" bees, more resilient to local pests and weather conditions.

Ok I think I am going to try to get a swarm then. What can I do to attract them to the hive or capture them?

Don't base your starting a hive on getting a swarm. Odds are slim you will be successful. Better to look around for nucs for sale. They are out there and you can find one. They will cost $125 to $150. Good Luck
