I'm wondering what treatment free beekeepers are doing in the couple of weeks around this time of year. And by this time of year, I mean the time of year this thread is started, April 26, 2011.
I'm especially interested in things you might be doing that beekeepers who treat don't, though I myself don't do anything special, other than not treat which may be done around this time of year before the honey flow.
This may sound weird, but I'm celebrating two of my favorite holidays today. The first, I call 'Bee Day' and it's the day 8 years ago when I drove three and a half (it's a four hour drive, but what can I say) hours to pick up my first (and last it seems) group of 20 3 lb. packages of bees from Koehnen in Glenn California. It's always a joyous occasion for me every year. The second holiday which tends to wander is the one I call 'Clover Day' and it's the day I first discover a clover blossom on my property. That just so happened to be today also.
As far as what I'm doing right now, I've made a couple of splits, and I'm building up to give four new queens homes next month. I've trimmed a bunch of PF-105 frames for narrow frame beekeeping, and I've melted down old and poorly drawn comb frames to be used as either small cell foundation frames or foundationless frames. I built ten new deeps and four new five frame nucs. I also converted one of my doublewide hives to a quad nuc, two four frame and two five frame nucs, each with disc entrances. With more division boards, it could serve up to eight two frame mating nucs. It's really utilitarian.
So, what are you up to?
