Default Virgin Queens killing each other

So, it is a general knowledge that the first virgin to emerge will kill the rest of the unhatched virgins. I have 2 questions about that.

    1. Does the virgin queen do the deed herself, or does she mark queen cell to be destroyed by the workers. I believe I read somewhere in Dolittle or Smith that the did not do the actual killing.

    2. If we remove queen cells into the incubator without workers, can the killing spree be prevented?

The queens sting the other queens through the cell. The workers remove the body. I've observed it and it's been documented since Huber's time.

If you put them in hair curler cages, yes.
