Question on Top feeder

I am making some Top feeders like the Miller feeder besides caulking the corners do I need to put anything on the wood to keep the sugar water from soaking threw the wood?? And if so what.

What kind of wood?

I always coat things in beeswax to keep the water out of the wood. I do this to the floats I use for the frame feeders as well.
