Ten of my eleven hives died early on this winter. I thought is was from the early cold weather which kept them from breaking cluster and moving to their stores. Most of the hives had upper brood chambers full of honey, and a lot of honey in the lower brood chambers as well. As I began cleaning the hives today I noticed a lot of varroa mites on the bottom board with the dead bees. Some of the bees had mites on them--all dead.
My question is, can I use these frames of honey and drawn comb to start new colonies. The hives have been subjected to single digit temperatures since they have died. I don't want to reinfest my new packages and nucs.
