Hello from Georgia!

My wife and I have decided to join the beekeeping ranks! We have our nucs ordered and put our first hive together last weekend. We are joining two local clubs next week and are very eager to get started!!
Any help/advice would be appreciated.
I want to build my own hives and want to use the lap joint (rabbit joint) rather than the box joint. Any problems? I will glue and screw with exterior decking screws. I also want to use cleats for handles (glued and screwed) as well because they are easier to make.
One more thing, I heard bobby-pins make a good foundation support clip...any thoughts?

Rabbit joints are fine (although not my preference). Making your own woodenware is one of my favorite parts of beekeeping.
