I have been lurking on this site for years and to join in the discussions I have finally registered.
I have been keeping bees since 1981 and this year wintered 29 colonies. Much has changed since Varroa came to my area in the early 90's and now SHB are in southern Ontario and sure to be coming my way.
Over the years I have been wiped out twice by mites and had AFB once. I never had a mentor, experience was my teacher, and that is a hard way to learn.

Welcome aboard. Don't sweat the SHBs too much. I have bees in Northern NY and move them back and forth from here to South Carolina and back, where I acquire SHB every year. I run about 500 cols. The SHBs have never been a problem for me.

You've had bees as long as you have and gone thru all you have, so we know you are a survivor. We'll be asking you questions.
