Hi Everyone,
Greetings from not-so-sunny California. Just another newbie beek, planning on getting started this spring with my first hives. Have been reading up, trying to absorb all of the do's and don'ts... it's a LOT of info! Great forum though, glad to have found it.

I'm interested in the Warre hives, but when they say they were designed for overwintering in the cold French winter, does that mean they are not suited for more temperate climates? Anyone have any info on using them in Northern CA? We definitely have cold-ish weather, but no snow or weeks of below zero temps.

Plan on hooking up with a local bee group and getting into some of their classes, but figure I'll pick the collective brain trust here as well.

Welcome Rob, Warre' are fine in most of the U.S. Warre' apiculture was never designed to deal with small hive beetles. If you think you can set it and forget it, plan on buying more bees and cleaning up the mess.

Are SHB a problem that far North in CA?

I know that they aren't here, but perhaps it's an issue of soil types.

Don't know anyone in the area with small hive beetle problems.
