I no longer suffer from DHAS anymore-

Shot both this morning. They didn't know what hit them!

Why, aren't they just the cutest two little dead deers you ever saw! Why are you pulling them up by their ears; expecting them to,..."smile for the camera"?
OK.. I need to remind myself to stay away from hunting stories/threads and photos,..sorry.

There is a story behind this, I ought to share it.
I got to my stand way too late this morning. I figured I had skunked it. Then, low and behold, a dark colored small doe pops in and out of the brush next to the pipeline i hunt. I could not get a shot off. Then the buck that I posted a pic of on the thread "deer" jogs past. Not 10 minutes later, the bigger doe pops out. I shoot her. Then the other doe pops out and walks towards deer #1, and then well, I guess you can figure it out. They fell about 5 yards away from each other. I have been having trouble with my eyes and this is a major accomplishment for me. Deer season is going good!

I agree with Oldbee. Those does look awfully small. They look like they just lost their spots.

I guess not everything is bigger in Texas.

    Mighty good eating though.

Yup, better in the pan or on the grill,...than on the highway.

Similar to the one I got this afternoon. It was a shoulder shot that went through and through but I got the ribs and plan to grill those. mmmm. -james

It was a 2.5 year old and a yearling. The bigger one is average or mite bigger than average, the smaller one is not huge, but they have to come out of the woods some time with management, why not on the last day of doe season! I need meat! If I had been able to tell how big the littler one was I might have let it walk, but like I said I need meat! They will give between 35 and 40 pounds of meat combined, enough to get us through the winter. After that we should have a cow to butcher.

Great pic and congrats, meat in the freezer Our deer here in central FL are small also compared to northern whitetails but they taste just as good In most areas of the country now shooting does has become neccesary for proper herd management as the whitetail population in most states is out of control and can only be effectively managed by hunters. I'm headed to Northern Wisonsin for the late archery seaon in 11 days, I hope to help them manage their herd by removing a few tasty does myself, and if that big 10 point Tom's been seeing up there happens by the stand he might make it into the freezer also.

The first doe I shot this year produced 170 lbs of freezer meat, it took two of us to move the deer to the truck AFTER it was gutted. When I first saw your pic I thought those were pics of rabbits. To be fair..ours are mule deer so they do tend to run a bit bigger. The back straps weighed in at 21 lbs.

    Good Grief!
I know they are smallish, but we have to control the doe population around here. The deer down here are not as big as the corn fed monsters that countryboy hunts.

Come on up next fall for a visit and while you are having your coffee on the deck you can take your pick. Last Sunday morning I shot one off the front deck, had it gutted and hanging in time to get to Church. There was a herd of 7 moving past...nice buck with them but I only had doe tags so I shot past the buck and took out the biggest doe. 200 meter neck shot. Last three years I have taken everything with neck or head shots. No meat damage and they drop right where they are hit. Check out the pic I took of a mule buck in the yard.

If more people would quit worrying about antlers (which don't cook up too tender in my experience) and shoot does of any size that walks by, the deer popultations would be in much better shape than they are now.

Here in Oklahoma, they are begging hunters to pass up on bucks, especially young ones, and shoot does. The ODW slogan is "Those in the know take a doe."

As to neck shots, my brother used to hunt with a shotgun with slugs and he always shot the deer in the neck. They are dead right there and no meat is lost.

The deer down here are not as big as the corn fed monsters that countryboy hunts.

Around here you will get 50-90 pounds of meat from an 'average' doe. You shot Bambi if you got much less than 50 pounds of meat from a doe.

A couple years ago, the neighbor boy hit a fawn with his motorcycle - ran over it's back legs. I put it out of it's misery with a .22 to the head. Cop gave me a roadkill permit for it (I had to promise to destroy the hide - they aren't supposed to give roadkill permits if they have spots) and we got about 20 pounds of meat from the fawn. Talk about tender though...

I actually don't hunt deer much anymore. I get all the meat I want from the cull deer in the pens and I can get all the deer I want with a rifle on nuisance permits on farms. (Shooting deer with a rifle isn't exactly hunting to me though.) And when you are used to seeing bucks that score 200-250 on a daily basis, it spoils you. 150 point bucks in the wild aren't common, and when one comes by your stand, it seems like a small rack to you but you know that it will be one of the nicer wild bucks you have a chance at...but you also want to give that buck a chance to spread his genetics to get bigger bucks in the area. (If you just shoot big bucks, you end up with herds of basket racks.)

I find that I just end up going for meat, but it's so much faster and easier to do several cull pen deer in one shot and stock up on meat. The body doesn't exactly enjoy getting cold and stiff in deer season either.

I do more deer hunting with binoculars than with a gun anymore. Maybe I'm just turning into a softie in my old age too.

Exactly. An to you comment about neck shots, that does waste meat. I like a well placed lung shot, but on one of these does I ended up shooting high and blowing out the back strap, with a .300 win mag, only got a pound of backstrap when done.

A good buck will give 50 pounds. Im telling you the deer are smaller here.

I'll concur with Kingfisher on the size of his deer. I went through part of my Navy flight training in Kingsville,TX and luckily was there during hunting season. Their deer are very similar in size to our FL deer, small! I would say that 50 lbs of boned out meat would be a large doe or average buck. Eatingwise, I'll take the does and yearlings any day over a rut-stinking buck.
