We recently paid a visit to the InterContinental Boston, a four-diamond hotel on Bostonís historic waterfront, which has introduced the cityís first hotel rooftop apiary. Since early summer, the hotelís colony has grown to more than 40,000 bees, hard at work pollinating the flora of an approximate 4 mile radius of the hotel, which includes Bostonís 21 acre green space, the Rose Kennedy Greenway. While the hotel wonít harvest honey this year, giving the colony a chance to build a reserve and survive its first winter, it expects to harvest as much as 40 lbs of honey season after season.
