Winter Bees

If the fall weather lasts a long time do winter bees age and progress into foragers, and if this happens what makes them survive the winter? Were into October now and we still have bees foraging and bringing in pollen, but we also have a lot of bees that just seem to be hanging out on the front of the hive.

My guess, and it's a guess, is that if mild weather continues so will nectar flows, and laying. Just as bees will become more active in a warm, early spring, I would think that they would continue "operations" into an extended warm period. With "winter bees" still to emerge...
