Default Is a swarm worth catching this time of year?

Had a call about a swarm the size of a cantalope, but decided to pass on it since its so late in the year and I dont have any extra drawn out comb to give them but wanted to ask does anyone have experience with catching a swarm this time of year and did they make it? Thanks

You can catch it and combine it with a week colony if you have one.

We caught a swarm the first week of September. I put them in a five frame nuc with frames that had new foundation. They had all five frames drawn and the queen was laying within a week. They are now on there third nuc box of frames. I am still feeding and they are very busy bringing in from goldenrod.

The way I look at it if nothing else and they don't make it, they are drawing out comb for later. They would not have made it out on there own, and the homeowner that called now buys honey from us.
If it looks like they are too light I will add sugar and wrap them up for winter.

plug nickle, unless you have a weak hive to combine them with, and then they had better have good stores. Which would mean they weren't that weak after all.
So much to learn, so little time!!

Well, a swarm is looking for a home.
Should I help it or not is the question.
Survivint the winter up north is a matter of beekeeper skill and desire.
I will give them a home.

Next time the opportunity arises. Tell the client that there is a $50 charge.

If they agree, use that to pay the postage and sweep all the bees into a screen cage and mail them to me.

Here in Florida I have no overwintering concerns. My bees fly almost everyday. More bees is always good.

I never turn down an easily reachable swarm.... no matter what month. Hive em and feed em and they survive nicely in a box with a small opening. The one I started with was captured at thanksgiving and swarmed again the first of march next year.
    Learned from that one !!!

I think that I would go get them. At least you could help them have a chance at making it by feeding them. I would surely try!

Put them indoors with a tube going outside like an observation hive or use an actual observation hive and feed them all winter.

A little drawn comb or other wealth would be helpful.

Well I just got them setup in a hive with undrawn comb. I got to see the queen crawling around on the bottom board so I know shes in there. Tomorrow I will add the last 3 frames and FEED,FEED,FEED!!!

Last fall I picked up two swarms. Both of them made it through winter just fine. They are real nice bees. Well worth the effort.
