I've done this and so have many Canadian beekeepers. Many still do for tracheal mite control. It's not a great method for varroa control. It's OK, not great. Our brood season is long around here, so I found event with 6 treatments there were always 10-15 % of the hives that still had higher levels than I wanted to see.
I treated with entrances fully open. I think in hindsight some restriction might have been better. Say 50 % closed or so. THe thing with formic is that it's temperature dependant so now it's probably cooler in Nova Scotia. The effect of reducing the entrance now is not the same as reducing on a late august 30 C day.
