Default Top Section in Nicot - what for?

I've been using the Nicot cage to rear some queens, and the last time I went in to remove the queen from the cage she ran into that section at the top that has a hole and runs around the backside. She eventually came back out, but not without having to fiddle around with trying to figure out what to do, which created extra time for this step. What is this section for, and could it be blocked off to prevent her from running in there?
    Thanks!

    Denny,

this is a very good question and I have wondered the same thing... I wasplanning on blocking off my 'rear-door' with a piece of wood, but will wait to hear what some of the more experienced Nicot Users out there have to say about the purpose of that passage to the backside.

    fafrd......Thanks for your response.

I wonder if it's some sort of retaining area for fondant or pollen patty? But it doesn't seem like the bees could access that much through the screened grid area.
