i recently moved to a farm which has a working beehive. they asked me to add more boxes (not sure on all the lingo since i'm new to this), but when i looked at the old frames they were covered in old wax which has been there for quite some time, so it's very crusted and moldy looking. so when they told me just to scrape it off i did, but couldn't get the wax that was on the plastic combs. i figured wax melts, so i boiled a huge pot of water and dipped each frame in it. this worked a little, but i didn't get the desired effect (frames looking brand new). they still have a thin layer of wax on them. my question is can i even remove all the wax and what would be the best way of going about it or is this a pointless goal? will the bees build upon the old wax or do they need a clean slate?
i've attached photos..the first is some of the wax that i scraped off
and the second and third are shots of the frames themselves...
