Default New Beekeeper in Lawrenceburg, IN

My dad was a beekeeper and I used to help when I was a teen. I actually had a few hives of my own for a couple years but didn't appreciate as much then and of course, they either swarmed or died out. I now have a small vineyard and a lot of small fruit trees that I make wine with. Since I have the room and it's my hope that the bees would benefit my overall strategy, I am committed to starting two new hives in 2010.

Based on my past experience with my dad, and knowing that we have tons of forage of all sorts the bees can visit, I really think the hives will do well. So my biggest concern is swarming and I want to be armed with the right knowledge to manage and prevent it.

I'll put the specific questions I have already in the other forum.

    Hi Jason!

    Hello and Welcome!
This forum is a good resource for learning more about bees and beekeeping. Be sure to check out the "How to Start Beekeeping" subforum - it covers a lot of the basics.

I also recommend getting involved with a local beekeeping club. There's a southeast Indiana club (contact Jon Wismann at jwismann@hotmail.com ) as well as a southwest Ohio club ( http://www.swoba.org/ ). Check'em out, and good luck!

    Welcome!

Your past "experience" should be a great help to US; please post often

My I suggest that Varroa mites are everyones "biggest concern".
Learn to control them, and swarm control will be a piece of cake

    Good Luck!

Thanks everyone... and Indypartridge for the club info! I was looking all over for some local ones and could not find.

Anyone want to share their currnet (common) hive configurations?

I'm starting two hives with all 8-frame medium bodies. 4-5 on each hive and screen bottom boards... Any thoughts.

I use deeps (3 per hive) and shallows for honey.
