How do you guys clean newly purchased jars an or plastic containers? Where I am we have hard water and it leaves a white residue on the jars, so I'm guessing I'll either have to get reverse osmosis or truck water in.

I had a gallon of acid we used in our dairy barn that is intended to desolve soap and calcium residue (sp?). I use it as directed 1 oz per gal as on label. You should have a dairy in your neighborhood that can help you with this problem. Their dairy supply truck should have a test kit and should be able to tell you specificly what you need to do to solve your problem.
If they are new and were packaged properly there shouldn't be any washing needed.
You told us that your water is leaving a residue in you jars, I told you how to solve the problem! ACID, but get your water sampled!
Upsde down in the dsh washer. That's how we clean our drinking glasses I happy cleaning honey jars same way. I don't know about the hard water maybe some type soap to help on that,
I usually find a very slight film of an oily feel on new glass jars... So I run all the new glass and plastic jars thru the wife's dishwasher, on normal cycle, with soap. Then store the jars until use.
