My best producing backyard hive is inhabited by a feral swarm I captured in the spring. As an experiment I confined them to one deep, an excluder and three medium supers. Despite a prolific queen they've yet to swarm; on warm nights they cover the entire outside of the hive. They quickly filled the three supers. I've given them three more.

Anyone have experience using one single deep for brood? I'd thought of adding a medium and letting them fill that with brood and honey or leaving as is and in the fall giving them a medium filled with honey for overwintering (relatively mild winters here in Mississippi)

Thanks.
