    Default hardware cloth for beetles

I just lost my 6 hives to beetles and have been trying to find the #6 mesh hardware cloth to make the traps. This size mesh is not available in my area. Does anyone know of a supplier to order the # 6 mesh.

    Try ACE hardware or McMaster

Read that Ace will not charge for shipping but will ask for your nearest store and deliver it there.

It's usually special order for hardware stores and you usually have to buy a whole roll.

The bee suppliers usually have it --- I know Brushy does.

Can I ask how you make a beetle trap out of #8 hardware cloth? Are there plans somewhere? I've had good success with the plastic signboard traps but I'm always looking for new ideas.

You sure that you don't want window screen instead. I would think that the SHB can go right through #8 mesh.

But then I am no expert.

I think that is the idea Fuzzy. They fall through the mesh in the bottom board and drop into a bath of vegetable oil where they drown.

this link was from slickmick. http://www.greenbeehives.com/.

I ordered one because I liked the access tray being in the rear away from the entrance (waiting on delivery). They kill you on shipping tho. There is suppost to be some issues with the tray filling with water when it rains, but that's not a problem for anyone resourceful to fix.

I would have built one myself, but finding the mesh and the labor would have eaten up the cost. I hate giving up my SBB tho, as my ladies are starved for ventilation, and top entrances seem to encourage those crazy beetles. Thinking about it.

My apologies, I assumed that the purpose was to keep the beetles out of the hive instead of how to get them out. Check the link below.

I don't know about your local ACE hardware. but I was able to buy #8 hardware cloth by the foot. it wasn't cheep - i think at least $4.50 per linear foot- but at least I didn't have to buy a whole roll to convert a couple of bottom boards to SBB.

Maybe an ACE would cut and ship for you if you paid by credit card? My
Ace is on Nicolas St, Framingham, 01701. nice folk too.

Go to doitbest.com and search for hardware cloth, a 10 foot roll costs $25.50 and is 3 ft wide. Free shipping also.

I published an article in the Sept. '08 issue of American Bee Journal that shows how a screened bottom board with an oil tray works to kill beetles. If you don't have that issue, send an e-mail to jfreeman1944@yahoo.com and I'll send you a copy. The article is also posted on the 'Beekeeping' page of my web site (below). I use 8 mesh hardware cloth.
