I looked at my hives this morning and heard a piping queen and also quacking type of noise. It is a strong colony and I split it 3 weeks ago. Any advise on this situation?
Thanks a bunch!
Re: Piping queen
Well, she started piping in the morning. At noon, a softball size swarm left the hive and settled 10 feet up on a small tree. I observed the mass of the swarm was slowly decreasing starting around 2:30 and by the time I was ready to capture at 3:30, there were only a handful of bees remaining. What happened?
The hive was inspected and there were a couple of closed queen cells and one open (emerged). I took a frame with one closed queen cell for a queenless nuc I have. The queen continued to pipe so I left that section of frame alone and closed it up. I hope I don't lose this colony to laying workers.
