I use it under and around 10ft in front of hive. Works well for weeds. But.... I have also noticed that ants like to build nests under it. At least I know where to look for them so I can poison them.

I was thinking the same thing but i was going to put some gravel or wood chips on top of the plastic. What do you use for the ants i seem to have a real problem with red ants and black ants with red heads, They are crawling all over the colonies , i have tried cinnamon but not sure if that is working?

They make stuff specificly to block weeds that still lets water drain though. We have it in our yard under some gravel. don't know if that would help with the ants or not.

I use a couple old roofing shingles under my hive stands and they help keep down weeds. Works for me.

I'm with Fred.... I put two shingles out in front of each hive. It has worked well for me, and wont blow away.

I use thick landscape fabric. Makes a big difference in controlling weeds, and avoiding having to run a string trimmer or mower close to the hives, on a warm day when you are in a T and shorts.

I also like the shingles, they're not slippery to walk on and the snakes don't like them

I have heard of using old pieces of carpet or rugs. It is supposed to keep weeds down and ants dont get under them.

Don't think you are on the right road simply because it is a well worn pathway.
