I am going to try growing the luffa squash this year, anyone ever done those?
You don't really eat them, I have heard that you can when they are very small but they are usually grown for the luffa sponges that you use to scrub your skin with.
I guess you just peel them and then you have to wash the insides that is like one big sponge and then let them dry out.
You can slice them up into whatever sizes and shapes you want.
Its still too early for planting here but I have all my seeds in that I ordered and I filled all the raised beds with loam/compost mix I had delivered last week and we are prepping some new in ground beds.
We just prepped a 50 foot row for asparagus today, I have been wanting to plant some for a while now but never got around to it during the right planting season.
I have lots of tomato seedlings sprouting in trays right now.
I have a rainbow mix, cherokee purple, kellogs pink, german striped, brandy wine, and some cherry tomatoes, there are a couple of others but I can't remember their names right now.
This is some of what I got this year.
celeriac, tomatoes, cucumbers, kohlrabi, purple broccoli and the green broccoli, orange and white cauliflower, various summer and winter squash, several types of onions, peppers, beets and radish, multi colored carrots, multi colored potatoes, sweet potatoes, peanuts, strawberries, pumpkins, watermelon , spinach, lettuce, several types of pole and bush beans, corn, peas, various herbs, I can't remember if there are more. I bought some of the kinds I usually grow and then I bought some new ones to try out.
I love all the funky winter squashes you can grow and I use them in my fall decorations.
I am going to put the potatoes in next week but everything else will wait until the beginning of May.
I will be so glad when I can finally plant, this feels like its been such a long winter.
I can't wait until I can actually go out and pick something fresh from the garden.
I have added several new beds this year to make room for the new things I want to try.
I think I am going to try trellising alot of stuff, I am going to trellis some squash and cucumbers for sure to make room in the garden.
I saw some pictures online of these huge squashes that were growing up a trellis and they didn't break, they say that zuchini and cucumbers will grow straighter too if you let them grow up a trellis.
I am doing the square foot and companion planting types of gardening to make the most of the garden space that I have.
I bet some of you are already planting in your areas. What is everyone else going to plant this year, are you trying anything new?
