    posting etiquette

I want to remind members that it is frowned upon, bad forum etiquette, to post a message consisting of phrases such as " I agree", "good one", "couldn't have said it better", "me too", etc. We go on the assumption that at any given time there are hundreds of members that agree with another member's post, and just as many that don't agree. Such postings will be deleted at will by moderators.
    Regards, Barry

I don’t understand the problem? Are any of these simple statements considered offensive?

Example someone posts I think it’s a good beekeeping practice to leave your hive uncovered all year. And someone posting I don’t agree. Or someone else posting I agree. How could someone just assume that everyone either agrees or disagrees? And how else would you communicate this.

    Aren’t you just splitting hairs!

What real good does it do anyone with either of those two replies? So you agree or disagree, doesn't help me. If you go on to explain WHY, now there is value in the reply.

So your going to delete a post because of insufficient dialogue? If a short statement doesn’t impress you skip to the next post.

You never answered my first question, are any of these simple statements considered offensive?? If not why would you waste your time deleting them?

There are a lot of posts that in some opinions have no value, why are these such a hot button for you?

Yes, dialog of this nature will get deleted.

I did answer this question in my first post. They will be deleted.

If not why would you waste your time deleting them?
Because it adds nothing to the value of the thread, becomes "chat", and that is not the tone I want to embrace for this board.

There are a lot of posts that in some opinions have no value, why are these such a hot button for you?
Because I strive for a certain level of quality.

There is a difference between a poll and a post. A poll is designed to measure interest or popularity. People reading posts expect to see some information, and simple agreement or disagreement means little. Popularity of an idea may in fact be inversely related to its usefulness.

Why not just chat on a forum? Well, because it drives out those whose time is worth something and leaves a residue of people with nothing better to do.

When we post to a forum, by default we are subscribed, and receive an email saying a new post awaits, AND that no more messages will be sent until we visit that thread! So what do you think all the lurkers and participants think of someone who posts something like. "Right on"?

I deliberately chose the threads I visit and post on in order to try to high-grade the content. If a thread gets too noisy, I'm out of here. If the forum gets too noisy, I'm gone. If abuse, thread hyjacking, and argumentative posts get to be common, I'm gone.

Maybe some would say, "Good", but I have seen time and again that the bad drives out the good.

Just as good chairing makes for good meetings, good, firm moderation makes for good forums. Maybe there is the occasional time to applaud, but most of the time, it is an annoyance. And, isn't there a chat room for chatting?

Brent, one of the things you may not know that a post of "I agree" generates an email to each moderator of the forum. I am a moderator on only one forum and my mail box quickly fills up. It takes a lot of time to read those emails. I can understand why Barry wants post that contribute or develope the thread.

This is probably my main "irritation" with "Well Said"
stuff. But also, it really lends nothing to the issue
    being discussed.

It's awful tempting to jump in with some form of
agreement when the writer nailed something almost
exactly they way you were thinking........

You are joking right?? This is one of the looser ones
    in my opinion.

Another bee site I have been to used to preview
your posts before they are seen. Another doesn't
allow you to post a link until you're in their good
graces or post a price in the trading area....
As if being "commercial free" adds a level of credibility??
    Now thats stuffy.

I appreciate this forum and this is just my opinion....so dont get offended, its a big world out there. Maybe thicker skin on my part is in order....whatever, Im a new beek with a bee log, and I could care less if I pass this test.

That's the only test you have to pass, welcome
and thick skin is always an added bonus. I've
stomped away from this very forum more than
once........ often for a month or more.

I'm confused here. I just checked several threads, and I see a lot of "I agree" and "ditto", etc. posted by moderators... I sense that there is a double standard, which is fine, I guess.

I also see a lot of what I consider for lack of better terminology "RSS feed" type threads - posts which just repeat or link to common news feeds. Most folks who are on-line have ready access to news, and repeating headlines in my mind is just as improper and lacking in etiquette as simply replying to a posting indicating agreement with a particular point-of-view.

I suppose we could all get down to basics here and only allow a person ONE statement per thread, thereby getting away from the "chatting" aspect of dialogue here on this forum. But then again, you might not have a forum, as a forum is a place for open discussion of ideas. If you close the fores (Latin derivative for "door" - ie. forum), you will certainly not have any discussion at all.

No double standard. I expect mods to do the same. I have been going through threads periodically and deleting these types of posts, mods included. Send me a PM to the ones you found and I'll x them.
