    Default Medium Nuc Demand??

I am working on making a Nuc run for this spring.

I am wondering if there would be any demand for
    medium Nucs??

I haven't seen anyone selling those?

What say ye? Is this still a marginal sector of bee
keeping or are the enough out there to warrant
    addressing them.

Thanks Ski........... I don't want this thread to
morph into a "for sale" one.

I'm just wondering if the demand (in general) is
strong enough for anyone to consider putting
    medium Nucs together in numbers.

For specifics regarding my run, Texas to Minn
    corridor, PM me.

    Its a great idea Sundance.
I have considered this for a couple of years now and am planning on making medium nucs this spring as well. I figured since no one else offered mediums I could fill a gap. With medium nucs, those using deeps can still purchase and just deal with a little burr comb until they can phase out the nuc frames.

    Good luck with your endeaver!
If you see me runnin' you'd better keep up!

I switched to 8 frame standard due to no one in the area sold medium nucs. I ran everything medium up to this year. I think its a good idea.....

    Default Mediums.

Mediums are a great way to increase your numbers/splits.
You may have to sell the concept over full depth frames.
You have a very good selling point in that you can put more divides on the truck vs the deeps.

Most any operation that makes up deep nucs wil make up mediums if asked. There are also several beeks who only sell mediums. Like myself, Honey Run...There is another guy in TN, but can't think of the name off of the top of my head.

I don't think there is a demand for them. Most people still use deeps. I am actually considering going back to deeps now that all my bees are dead and I am starting over anyway...

I made my own because of trouble finding medium nucs. I think you would see a moderate but growing demand for them.

I was considering going out and cutting some 7 frame swarm boxes. I have had two guys who are very good , or lucky..LOL tell me that often the swarms can barely fit in a 5 frame, but have immediately filled it from the start. They say this is because you cannot know how big the mother hive the split is from . I'll be picking up 6 swarm boxes from one guy soon, but he said to be prepared for tranfer into a full size box right away, as these are already full to the brim. vEither way, I won't gripe about it.

    Sundance,
Since I have mostly medium-size nuc boxes and only 2 deep-size, I was thinking the same thing. We WERE trying to phase the deeps out, but just haven't seen a market for mediums. So we're planning on keeping deeps just for our for-sell nucs. I do hope you get some business.

Are you on LC or SC comb?

BTW, The othe concern we have/had over selling medium nucs is that we don't know of any "cardboard" nuc boxes in Medium size. So it seemed most practical to sell them in Deeps to go into the deep cartons.

What do you all sell your nucs in? wood or carton?

I think that you can get the cartons in mediums now. It is a custom order, but I think if you have a large enough quantity, not a big deal on price.

I custom ordered medium nuc boxes last season. I got them from a custom box company in TX. They cost me 2.50 each shipped to me. The only down side was folding and gluing them together. You can even get them with your logo printed on them, but the die was going to cost too much for me to justify doing it.

    Bluegrass:
Great looking little nuc, there. Does it come with frame rests? Sundance and I would be interested if you're having much demand for this size nuc?

Sundance, Bluegrass: either of you using SC?

This is my first time selling Nucs Waya.......... And
I haven't committed to it absolutely yet (70% sure).

And no to SC............ I've weaned away from SC and
use more Pierco. I have plenty of SC in my own
equipment but I am focusing more toward genetics.

Just not enough time for SC and not enough $$$ yet
    for HSC....

If things work out I'd use HSC in a heartbeat though.

No frame rests. I used 3/8 th ply bocks that I stapled in as frame rests. I had them made so that five frames fit in snuggly so I could ship them without frame rests if I needed to.

I cut all my equipment down to mediums a few years ago so medium nucs is all I sold last season. I know that several people placed them back into deeps. I don't know if anybody baought them because they where medium.

My brood chamber combs are all foundationless. I use thin surplus in my honey supers.

We're making a modest commitment. I'd like to sell 10 nucs just to break the ice and my own inertia.
