a lot will depend on where you are and the kind of honey flow you might expect.
another role of the dice is... the flow you get may not be anything like the flow you expect.
I haven't got the time to manage like that. Certainly, less bees to raise means more bees to forage but timing is everything. Here in the Northeast, our spring build up, forage, dearth and winter build up cycles are short so I'd rather manage the colony as an evolving unit and not just for honey.

But, build your hives up early in the spring,using 1 to 1 syurp.Give them the space they need to build up. Watch for swarm cells,and try to prevent swarming.When they have built up strong before the honey flow,put your supers on ( I usally put 2 med.on to start).Drawn comb if you have it,and add supers when needed. This is what I do, and there are many question between each step that I outlined, that is if your new to beekeeping.What works for me may not work for you,but thats the fun of beekeepingand of course what tec. had to say.
