Default Bees staying in top box=time to feed?

It is the 1st week of January and all my hives have the bees in the top boxes. Is this a sign that they are low on food and that I should start feeding them?

    thx

some strains stay there all winter. the common way to see if they are low on stores is to "heft" the back of the hive to estimate the wieght of the stores. good luck, mike

I'm with Mike. Go by weight not location. Is the hive heavy or light?

Light or heavy, I have one hive that's always up top. Check the food supply first.
