SBB and formic

Did anyone ever have problems with galvanized mesh on a SBB while using formic acid. The salesman I dealt with wanted to upgrade me to stainless steel. He said the formic would eat through the galvanized in no time. I know SS is better but also more $$. I opted for the galvanized stuff. Was that a mistake?

Any type of acid will break down the galv. Galv is a basic coating that they dip hot rolled steel in. Stainless will not break down. Thats why they use it in labs, kitchens, ect.. Ask him what kind of s/s it is. Stay with the 304 or 316 s/s, it will pretty much last forever.

It's a chemical reaction between the galvanization and the acid. Will cause the screens to rust out quicker, which, because of the thin wire in the screens will happen fairly quickly.

Not particularly harmful to the bees. "Use as directed"...
