This is just a quick survey to find out what percent of beekeepers super with 10, 9, 8 or 7 frames in a standard hive box or with 8, 7, 6 in an 8-frame hive

in 10 frame gear -

10 frames for foundation.
9 frames for comb that was previously in a ten frame box.
Then 8 frames for for comb that was previously in a 9 frame box.

Hope that makes sense. Basically they don't draw the comb from foundation out far enough in a ten frame box for me to be happy to put that drawn comb straight back in as 8 frames per box, so when those 10-frame combs come back from extraction they'll go into the hive at 9 per box. Then when they are next extracted they'll go into the hive as 8 frames per box.

The 'long term' goal is 8 frames on honey supers, and staging it out gives me nice quality comb and the least possible burring.

Before power uncapper/ after

Used to prefer eight frame spacing for hand uncapping right into the spinner. But now that we power uncap, eight frame spacing makes for more honey and wax that has to be hand dumped into the spinner, so we are making any new supers to a nine frame spacing. Ten frame spacing for foundation.
