Extractor modification ....need advice

I own a Brushy Mountain Italian 9 frame radial extractor......with a hand crack. I would like to motorize this extractor without spending an arm and leg. Brushy Mtn. sells a conversion kit for a $430 bucks which is pretty big chunk of change. I figure there must be a more reasonable solution. I would really like to hear from anyone who has done their own home grown modification. The more detailed the better. Thanks!
