It can be done either way. What carbide says is right, but removing the bees and using only the frame works if the weather is suitable. I normally shake off most of the bees, but do not take pains to get them all off. If it is cool or wet, I leave them on to provide heat.

what if your a newbee, first year, have hives, nuks but no eggs or nectar or pollen for them? I do know some local beeks so not sure what to do. iddee i sent you a pm.
