Yes, they are expensive. So you go to your local Starbucks and go into the bathroom with a phillips screwdriver and a knapsack. Under the sink...........heh heh heh.
I use a tankless water heater in my house which I love but some of the more remote fixtures would probably benefit from a point-of-use heater like you mention. You might also investigate something homemade. You can buy a lot of water heater elements and tubing for $200.
