Re-Roofing. Any hints/suggestions/warnings?

Put Ice & Water Shield down on the plywood running the length of the overhangs and also in any valley. Most of it comes three feet wide. Also, now that I've seen the pictures, You might consider ridge vents and make sure you get the step flashing under every course of shingles around the chimneys. DON'T JUST SLATHER TAR ALL AROUND IT.

OK, Here's my Dad's and my plan for our roof as of now;

1. We're going to strip all the old shingles from the roof by sections. Than we'll cover the sections with roofing felt/tar paper and install architectural shingles.

2. We're replacing the drip edge, gutters, and all other flashing (around chimneys etc.)

3. We're going to install ridge vents.

4. Behind both chimneys we're looking into installing those domed fans, the ones that spin around in the wind and move the air. I don't know what there called.

5. We'll also be taking out the current vents and the two broken down fans.

6. And finally we're looking into putting in a few sun tunnels.


This has been and is a learning experience. Thank you all for your suggestions, they've been very profitable. Please post more!

Don't skimp on the flashing around the sun tunnels, vents, etc. Water can move amazing distances uphill and sideways via capillary action between shingle layers.

Remember, you can install all the roof vents you want and they won't do squat if you don't have sufficient eave vents for air to enter and move the attic air up and out. Now is a good time also to bring any bathroom fan piping up through the roof with its own roof vent.

Good idea to remove old shingles. I don't like the lumpy look of extra layers of shingles, plus each layer adds to the dead load of the roof system. I built my house in 1977. I had reshingled twice, after storms. Two years ago, I had the house remodeled and installed an old-timey rolled-tin roof. I priced the standing-seam steel roofs and found them way expensive. But I found a guy who could do the old style cheaper. I love it, especially during a rainstorm-makes for good sleeping. The "tin" roof(terne metal-galvanized steel) should last at least 100 years.

The rain has cooperated and we've been able to get two sections of our roof felted and two rows of shingles down. Today we went out there and got the starter courses down and two layers of shingles. Things are looking up! It's a big roof and a big project, but this improvement has been very encouraging!

Progress is coming along. Today We were able to get the first two sections of the roof finished. That pneumatic nailer is awesome!

Unfortunately we can't install ridge vents because we don't have an overhang to put eave cents in. So we're going to look into getting wind turbines.

Things are moving right along. It was overcast for most of the day so that kept it cool and tolerable.
