Boxed a softball-sized swarm this evening in south Amarillo that was hanging over a garage opening. It was after dark when I got there.

Trying to figure out what I will do with this small swarm.

Sunday, May 30, 2010 - Milton NH ... Discovered that our hive (the only one of two Russian nucs purchased spring of 2009 that survived the winter) had a swarm in a small tree above the hive today.) Upper 70's to mid 80's. Somewhat windy, but sheltered at the hives. Not overly humid. The quantity of bees would have fit in a gallon bucket. We think we got the queen and a lot of the swarm in another hive, but difficulties with vines in the tree caused us to drop a lot of bees on the ground. Will try to post pics once downloaded.

Default 5 swarms in last 5 weeks.

We have gathered 5 swarms over the last 5 weeks in fruit trees within 100 feet of our hives. (One 2 days ago and another today.) All seem to be doing VERY WELL INDEED!
We had all 3 hives survive the winter in strong shape, but even if all 3 swarmed, where did the other 2 swarms come from? Any ideas anyone?

June 1. My 14-year old son boxed a very large swarm in my backyard while I was away for a sleep lab test. I was very proud of him. He had helped me a couple of times. Now I can relax knowing that he can cover for me.

    Finally!!! 2 small swarms.

Something told me to walk in my neighbor's yard. He has a hive there that I manage. My shoulder is in too bad a shape to be pulling boxes off to look at frames. But 2 days ago I took all off but the brood chamber with is a high and medium. All of the other boxes were almost full of honey and capped honey. Was a little brood mixed in but not much. Added another super as the 4th box from the bottom. (I have been in severe pain and taking pain killers since I looked in the hive!!!!

Anyway something told me to walk over there and it was getting toward dusk. As I was walking up to the hive I heard bees but it didn't register at first. Walking back I heard them again. It was coming from the plum tree not far from the hive. There were bees in several places on the tree and some on the ground. Carefully moved the bees around on the ground and saw the queen. Went and got me a 5 frame medium nuc with 2 frames of honey. Put the box in front of the bees and they started marching into the box. All except the queen and those that were all around her. Finally to a small stick and pushed the ball of bees and queen up onto the entrance and left.

Other bees were still in the tree but only in one spot. Swarm on the ground was not a lot of bees but the queen looked mated. The second swarm is about 3 times larger which still isn't saying much. Softball size??

Will look in the AM and see if the swarm is still in the tree. If it is, I will hive it in a 3 frame high nuc. Leaving tomorrow for 2 weeks to see my family in SC and go to the beach. Either they make it or they don't. Will close up the entrances on both so that they are only around 1 bee in width.

Captured three smaller swarms, very likely "cast swarms" and the main had taken place earlier. Also thought to be from feral colonies.

Maybe the bees are starting to break loose now in MO! I had two swarm calls in two days 6/14 and 6/15 both on Ft. Leonard Wood. One was small and I believe to be queenless (guys got me a bucket truck for it! Easy!) and yesterdays was a good 3-4 pounds of bees in an ornamental tree in a parking lot eye level...couldn't be easier! I even had a nice bench to sit on while waiting for the stragglers to get in.

Actually drove through a swarm today! Incredible. Turned the car around and they were gone. I ran home and set up my hive! (but they didn't find it)
