larger than a football, smaller than a basketball LOL
found tonight May 31 around 6:30pm

one of my hives swarmed either yesterday or today to an apple tree about 20 feet from the hives... actually same tree they went to last year and only a few branches away. Its in a hive for now.

Just caught my first swarm in a trap this afternoon at 3:30 in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia.

I just happened to be standing there when the swarm moved in. Pretty fun to watch.

I got a good sized swarm this morning at 9am in downtown Halifax. Watched the whole thing happen, and it was amazing. Not the first time I've seen one, but still so wonderful to see. I know where the swarm came from, and know that it travelled just about exactly 1.5km through downtown Halifax to reach me. We have a network of beekeepers on a single Google Groups email list, so I was able to put the word out and get a reply right away to hear who lost the swarm, and a couple of people between here and there reported seeing the swarm pass. Nice Day 82F / 28C - 16 days earlier than my first one last year.

June 17th Swarm in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Easy collection 5 feet off the ground in a cedar tree. Set a box under them on an overturned garbage can and got them in one shake.

Saturday, August 31 in Pereau, Nova Scotia.

Went to a friend's yard, and heard bees above and beyond the yard's bees. Started looking around, and there was a big swarm about 20 feet outside his electric fence. Assumed it was his, but soon realized that it was only just arriving from somewhere else. There were tons of bees in the air, and it got bigger and bigger. We could see the direction they were coming from.

Swarm maxed out a 10 frame deep. Once we got it cleaned up, we could still hear bees in the woods. We looked around and soon discovered another swarm, about 50 feet up in a tree. Too high to get it, so we set up several swarm traps in the area. Fingers crossed now on that...

    Fun afternoon.

    What is needed:

    • zip code, city or county
    • date when the bees swarmed or when you found the swarm.
    • comments - example: if the swarm came from your hive, or if you were called to pick up a swarm, how long was it there. This is not for cutouts unless the bees just took up residence and are not established. It would also be great to include a small photo of the swarm.

This forum is not for general discussion.
