Had a swarm call today in SW Virginia. First one I have heard about around here this year. They were about 25 feet up in holly tree. Probably 5 lbs of dark colored bees. I got there in time to see another swarm issue from a second hive and fly about 50 feet up in a white pine. Got the first one hived up and went back after dark to collect. Had to let the high one go.

May 7 near Christiansburg, VA. A *tiny* swarm at the exact same location as one I picked up last year. Trying to get into an old nest under someone's house. Fortunately, the homeowner had plugged up the holes, so there were just frustrated bees. Ran a nuc-sized trap straight over there. Hived them today, and it looks like a queen might be inside. Followed Michael Bush's recommendation and gave them a frame of brood to keep them home.

Last year's swarm was huge and much later in May, so I set up another, larger swarm trap in the same spot. Maybe lightning will strike twice.

    9-10-11, Blacksburg, VA 24060 morning

Clear day. A swarm was found in the local community garden adjacent to some of my and others hives. It was a nice 4 or 5 lbs, 3' off the ground. Hived them easily and brought them home around dusk. It's really late for them. We are having a fair goldenrod flow so I will see how far they build and either add resources or combine around first week of Oct. It was not obvious which hive they came from. Could have been a crowded nuc, but that's a lot of bees for a double 5 frame med nuc. We also have a large log at the site with a strong feral colony so it could have been them.

Caught my own bees swarming yesterday, April 8, 2012. Location is central Virginia, where the winter was gentle and Spring warmer than normal. The swarm came from a one year old hive and clustered in 3 spots in the yard. I was able to catch all 3 and put them into the top bar hive that we built over the winter.

Three swarms off my own bees on Monday, April 16, here in Linden, VA -- one three-pounder and two one-pounders. I was telecommuting, so I was able to catch them. Phew! My bees have never swarmed this early. And I'm already maxed out on equipment despite building up a healthy surplus over the winter. Will be building new boxes and frames this weekend.
