Oldbee, I've read that sparrows will enlarge an opening to gain access into a nesting box. What size opening does a bluebird box have? Is it smaller than martin house entrances?

Those nasty sparrows! This is the first time I have heard that. From the book I have: "The size of entrance hole is by far the most critical dimension of the bluebird nesting box". It says not to be larger than 1 1/2" nor smaller than 1 7/16". Some entrances have an oval shape though. I think the entrance for martins is slightly larger.

    "Those nasty sparrows!"

Based on what I've been reading, you may be right, lol.
Those are pretty exact measurements for a bluebird box, if you ask me
The measurement for martin house entrance holes ranges from 1 3/4" to 2 1/4".
