    if you split a hive , an even split , and you couldn't find the queen , how can you tell which hive to add the new queen to ?

    wait 3 days and look for the hive that still has eggs in it. All the eggs will have hatched already.

    Also within a few hours the hives will sonud different. The queenless split will start to sound annoyed.

    I just did my first split last Saturday. I did spend the time to find the queen but I understand what you are asking.

    I have a hard time seeing eggs. Most of the wax I have is still pretty white.

    The queenless hive does sound different.

    In my case I tried to make sure that both splits had very young brood hoping that I could identify (verify, actually) the queenless hive by finding queen cells.

    The queenless hive will have queen cells started that are noticable in 48 hours, maybe sooner if you look carefully. The queenless hive will have a dissonance to the hum.
