If a tangential extractor has a rectangular, not square basket, is there any reason one can't put frames on all four sides as long as they fit? The basket in question is about 8" one way and about 10" the other... it would fit shallows/mediums on either side I figure. Granted one set wouldn't get spun quite as hard (d/t less distance from the center), but as long as you get them spun out, is there a difference?

    Short answer........ No, maybe.

Could it be done? Sure could try.

If you can get it to balance you are in biz. But my guess is the time spent juggling, trying to hold the extractor down, and swearing, you could have spun out a pair.

As so often said here........ Give it a try and let us know.

    But a non-square basket is a two-frame (intended) extractor?

My understanding (without seeing your extractor) is that it is a 2 frame.

Keep in mind that if you try to squeeze 4 in the inner 2 will take longer. My guess is you will extract at a faster rate keeping only 2 in the basket.

Makes sense, but here's a question. Why make a two-frame extractor if you could've fit in four frames?

    Here's the extractor basket:

(That's Duke Wilhelm IV, not sure why a piece of stainless is pre-empting his petting session)

So why not add something to allow frames on the short sides, thusly (well that's a deep just leaning there, but you get the idea)?

It seems like for a given diameter tub, why make ait for two frames where you could fit four?

Because they would get to charge more for a four frame extractor.

I can't think of a rational idea for making it a 2 frame in the first place........

A 4 frame basket can easily spin 2. The reverse is not possible....

The savings from contruction of a smaller basket have to be very small.
