Honey Gate Gasket

I just bought a honey gate to install in a large plastic bucket. The honey gate comes with one rubber gasket. Does the gasket seal against the inside of the bucket or the outside of the bucket? It seems to work either way.

I am pretty sure it goes on the inside of the bucket.... but it ain't my bucket, so you have the option.. : ))
