Does anybody know of a source for the small round metal vent grilles as used on some models of observation hives?
-
Brushy Mt. puts them on all of their observation hives. You could call them and ask if they would sell you some.

Here's a thought.
Round vents (1-2" dia) are used in house siding. Just drill hole, push-in aluminum ("plug") vent, some have screen on back side, some dont. Look at Lowes/Home Depot w/ other vents (foundation, etc).
Good Luck,

Sounds like a good description of what is on the Brushy Mt observation hives.

Rockler Woodworking has something similar for venting entertainment centers. They have a website.

Brushy Mountain is currently out of them, but I can buy a box of 12 for about $1.00 each. They said the hive I saw that had these wasn't being adequately ventilated and the bees were hot. Lowe's has some 2" aluminum louvered vents, but they look really big for what I want. I think I'll just cut some holes with a Forstner bit, profile the edges with a router and use fiberglass screen wire stapled to the inside.

I'd use #8 or #7 hardware cloth on the inside instead. That way it takes the bees a lot longer to propolize it up.

I like the idea of a vent made into the wood.
If you counter-bore from the back w/ larger bit, it might look better.
Good luck,
