    It is definitely just as effective in fresh
    water. First check for legality in your
    state. Tying a cup of dry dog or cat food
    in cheese cloth and hanging it over the
    side of the boat is deadly on sunfish/bream.

    In Europe I've read of folks using a sling
    shot to launch maggots out there for pan
    fish.

    people chum for cats all the time. And I've caught cats up to 9 lbs and salmon to 30 on as light as 6-lb line, but Michael's right, I had open water, where I could have even used lower test (and certainly released "dead" fish, though) but if there's a snag, cats find it quick. Around here, big cats aren't very common, but evne the guys woh routinely river fish for 4-10lb channels often use 20+lb braid. If they can take line, that's exactly where they take it.
