In Roger Morse's book he tell's of making them from a three-eights dowel,
I don't think it's a real exact thing, but they need to be close. I've seen a lot of descriptions of making them on the rounded end of a dowel also.
Droneman I think what your describing would work fine Ive used large pencils and even just dry branches with a tapered end and they were accepted.I would also give the bees a chance to clean the cups out before I graft into them.
