I have heard of grease patties but have never used them. What is the purpose of a plain grease patty with powdered sugar? Do the bees benefit from anything other than the sugar? Is the grease just a binder?
Grease patties are for tracheal mite prevention.

How do grease patties prevent tracheal mites?

As far as I know the current theory is still that they hide the smell of young bees which the TM have to find to reproduce. It seems like there would be some contact between the mites and the grease which would also help, but I don't know of any evidence to support that theory.
