It's basically a light/siren on a motion detector that alarms ( at a very high pitch and frequency) when ever anything is in it's "eye" for morre than 20 seconds, then resets itself. Our NYS Encon loaned me one to test due to ongoing problems at our equipment yard along with some non-lethal (rubber) buckshot but have not intention of using as you have to be with about 30 feet. It just sounds like a bad idea to me. The "gitter" worked suprisingly well and for the 1st. Time in years the bears left our stored equipment alone. It was also fun to watch my wife walk in front of it unexpectedly on the way to the chicken pen.

I have used the "critter getter" and they work so - so. I would not use it as my only defence against a hungry bear for my hives.
Bears depending on how much exposure to populated areas or how hungrey they are, tend to not be bothered by them.
I used (2) on a dumpster this year and the bears never missed a meal.

Agreed, we use it WITH our 2 strand fence hung with muslin soaked in bacon fat.

It uses 1 -9 volt battery and even with my wife and the chickens setting it off occaisionally the battery lasts a month or longer. We don't hear it in the house as it is in use in the fall and spring during colder weather when the windows are closed. Of course I don't have any neighbors to complain but I've never actually heard it unless I'm in the Honey House.
