Bear Attack!

I had a bear attack my only hive yesterday, I am soo bummed! I was able to salvage 12 frames of honey.... but the bees are a lost cause. I will have to start over in the spring and get an electric fence. Does anyone know about protection against bears? What are the best defenses out there? What are good companies for fencing?

Search for bears and you will find several discussions on this board. Most involve fencing and baiting the fence. A few involve recipes for bear meat.

A .357 will work but you just have to keep shooting till you get lucky,as most will just bounce off.A speed loader is a real asset in that situation.Sorry,I just had to add this tidbit from my bear killing experiences.Around here an electric fence will keep out 99% of the bears.I have 8 of them and use 12 volt car batteries.

Sigh, we don't have bears here.

But if I were in need of protection in the field, the .44 mag and Winchester Partition Gold ammunition would be the best combination. Having a sidearm on means that you would not be seperated from your weapon. A rifle would not always be close at hand, however a lever action .44 would be good accompaniment to the handgun.

I also would not carry either without enough practice to become efficient at a very minimum. In a heart pumping situation you will start doubting your abilities. Find someone who can teach you the techeniques of drawing and fireing quickly and accurately.

You should also consider cutting off the trigger finger of your glove.

In New Hampshire, the state agriculture department will lend an electric fence for one year. If it keeeps out bears, then you can decide what kind to buy for the next year. I've also heard that some states will compensate beekeepers whose hives are damaged by bears. Do contact your state agriculture department.
