Barry - tried to stirr Robert up with this one: was on Essex Eng. site and found this posting by J.T.Brown: one large screw top jar, ground green almond husks (walnut will work) fill jar to 1/2inch from top; add alcohol (vodka will do) to fill; steep 30 days, soak a fume-pad, place pad facing brood, leave for 30 days, keep repeating. No more mites! Now, would it be better to drink the vodka first or after the first soaking? Check out the posting: www.beedata.com/data2/green_husks.htm
Do you know if it matters if you have english or Black walnuts. I have hundreds of black walnut trees around and I have been made sick husking them out.
Some of these guys aren't too far from me, but I've never heard of it. I'm going to re-post this link on the Irish List, to see what people think. I suspect they may not be too impressed.
Rainsridge: the posting by J. T. Brown concerning green almond husks and alcohol also stated that walnut hulls would work. He gave an Apothecary that carried tincture of walnut.
From what feedback I've had so far, it seems the jury's still out on this one. Someone claims to have used it successfully for 8 years, so it works for him, the question is, does it work anywhere? If anyone wants to try it, it would be helpful to monitor mite fall before, during and after, and post the results, so we could get an idea of how effective it's likely to be.
