Moving hives

I have a hive that I would like to move about 500 ft. to have better winter protection. I am new to beekeeping. What is involved and what precautions should I take. Dale

I am in my second bee keeping year and have always been told to move bees under 3 foot or over 3 miles otherwise they will return to the original (now hiveless) site and perish. I have read on other sites that people do move them and I suppose that if it is done in the deep of winter when they don't come out they will re-orient when they do come out again anyway.

Hope you get some more informed help form some one more experienced than me.
